Behind the Scenes

behind the scenes of a portrait session

How my new profile photo came to life

From time to time, I put myself on the other side of the camera — just so I don’t forget how difficult it can be, and how stressful it feels for people coming to a photoshoot for the first time (and that’s most people).

Probably the most important thing I’ve learned about portrait photography is this: you simply can’t do it while being deadly serious.

Even during the most formal business headshot session, there has to be room for a bit of looseness and a bit of nonsense. I usually start first, and after that everything gets much easier.

I start a self-portrait session with some weird face that makes me laugh and breaks that unnecessary, stiff seriousness. Then a chain reaction begins — each next frame becomes more relaxed and more natural than the one before.

The side effect? Dozens of photos I probably should never show to anyone. But I never delete them. You never know what kind of LinkedIn post idea might pop into your head 🙂

This is what the making of my new profile photo looked like.

More real people. More stories. Coming soon.
